SEI Credit Union was founded as Pocatello United States Employees Federal Credit on July 7, 1935 by Vern Roche. Vern was a postal employee who wanted to develop a way for people to get small loans with little savings and a good rate of return. Ten people signed the original application for charter and pledged $5.00 each. Federal charter was granted on August 10, 1935 by the Governor of the Farm Credit Administration, charter number 517. The original field of membership was postal employees and railway mail clerks located in Pocatello, Idaho, members of their immediate families, and associations of these employees.
An organizational meeting was held on August 21, 1935. A board of directors, a credit committee, and a secretary-treasurer were elected at this time, as well as a Supervisory Committee. Par value was set at $5.00 per share. Business began on September 7, 1935, and the first loan was granted on September 7, 1945 for $30.00 at 10% interest.
On August 7, 1958, the name of the credit union was changed to Southeast Idaho United States Employees Federal Credit Union (SEI-US Employees Federal Credit Union). The field of membership was changed and expanded to include civilian employees of the United States Government who worked in Bannock, Bear Lake, Bingham, Caribou, Franklin, Oneida, and Power counties in Idaho, employees of the credit union and their families, members of immediate families, and any organization of such persons but not including employees of the U.S. Naval Ordinance Plant in Pocatello.
The field of membership once again changed in February of 1988 to include those civilian employees and military personnel of the United States Government who work in or are stationed in Bannock, Bear Lake, Bingham, Caribou, Franklin, Oneida, and Power counties in Idaho, members of National Guard units located in the above named counties, spouses of persons who died while within the field of membership of this credit union, employees of this credit union, persons who retired as pensioners of annuitants from the above employment, members of their immediate families, and organizations of such persons.
In October, 2007, the field of membership changed to include Special Employee Groups (SEGs). There are 42 SEGs as part of the field of membership now. We now have a total of 2,375 members and $15.4 million in assets.
On July 1st, 2014, SEI-US Employees Federal Credit Union changed the name of the credit union. It changed to SEI Credit Union.
